Claude can’t watch a video the way you do, and it has no video editor built in. Every method below gives it two things: a text version of the footage to read, and a way to make changes.
| FFmpeg skill | Remotion | Timeline over MCP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starts from | Your footage | Code, plus any media | Your footage |
| Result | A rendered file | A rendered file | An edit you can open and change |
| Runs | Your machine | Your machine, or your own render setup | The editor’s servers |
| You adjust by | Asking again | Asking again, or editing code | Asking, or by hand |
| Good for | Cleaning up talking-head footage | Motion graphics and explainers | Ads and edits you’ll review |
FFmpeg skills: footage in, file out
A skill teaches Claude Code to run FFmpeg, a command-line video tool, usually with a transcription step. The best-known open-source example is video-use. You drop raw footage in a folder, chat with Claude Code and get final.mp4 back.
It reads a transcript with word timings, removes filler words and dead space, grades colour, adds fades at the cuts and burns in subtitles. It can also review its own render at each cut and try again.
Choose it if you’re at home in a terminal, want your footage on your own machine, and are happy to review an output file.
Keep in mind: video-use needs FFmpeg and an ElevenLabs API key. There’s no timeline, so changing one cut means asking for another pass.
Remotion: video as code
Remotion builds video from React components, and it publishes official skills for Claude Code. Claude writes code, and the code renders to video. That makes it strong at things that are hard to get by cutting footage: data-driven animation, product explainers and templates.
Choose it if your video is mostly designed motion, or you want to generate many versions from data, and someone on the team can read the code.
Keep in mind: check the license. Remotion’s free license covers individuals, non-profits and for-profit organisations of up to 3 people. Larger companies need a paid one. It’s also less natural for cutting a long talking-head recording, though it can work with footage.
A timeline over MCP: edit together
Here Claude drives an actual editor through an MCP server, so the project stays open and editable. In Montik, which we make, you add the server to Claude Code in one line:
claude mcp add --transport http montik https://studio.montik.app/mcp
Then run /mcp in Claude Code to sign in. Claude gets the same actions as the editor’s buttons, and each change shows up on the timeline in your browser. You can step in at any point and it builds on your changes.
Choose it if you’re making ads or social videos, want to adjust the cut by hand, or need someone else to review and approve it.
Keep in mind: your footage is stored in the cloud, the free plan has monthly limits, and Montik is built for short videos. Other hosted options fit other jobs, as our MCP server comparison covers.
You can mix them
These aren’t exclusive. A motion graphic rendered with Remotion can be uploaded to a Montik project as one clip. An FFmpeg pass can prepare files before an edit starts.
A simple way to decide:
- No footage, mostly motion? Remotion.
- Footage, and you only want a cleaned-up file? An FFmpeg skill.
- Footage, and the edit needs your eye or someone’s sign-off? A timeline.
